Tides Welcomes Four New Client Services Directors
Tides is at a pivotal moment: with the right team in place, we have the opportunity to grow our impact and build a future of shared prosperity and social justice. Tides’ team members are as bold as the challenges we take on. We cross boundaries. We embrace risk. And we act with empathy and respect. “Tidesters” are an interconnected and diverse team driven by impact.
Tides is excited to announce our four newest Client Services directors: Joel Bashevkin, director of social ventures; Peter Martin, director of philanthropy; Roxana Shirkhoda, director of special initiatives; and Edward Wang, director of corporate philanthropy.
“These new directors possess the extensive expertise and dedication needed to work successfully with our partners to accelerate the pace of social change,” says Tides’ CEO Kriss Deiglmeier. “They bring new philanthropic mindsets, new networks, and new ways of thinking strategically to our current bench of talented advisors and expertise.”
Roxana Shirkhoda is an experienced leader with over a decade of experience in financial analysis, strategy development, and outcomes measurement.
In her new role at Tides as director of special initiatives, Roxana is enabling social change by facilitating multi-stakeholder collaborations that result in a positive sum approach to impact –
bridging Tides’ robust network of funders, nonprofit organizations, policy leaders, and corporate partners. She is currently building collective action initiatives focused on immigrant rights while growing Tides’ client engagement strategy.
Prior to joining Tides, Roxana was director of Advisory Services at NPX, a fintech startup working with investors to fund nonprofits for social and financial returns. At Google, she managed a multi-million dollar annual portfolio of global computer science nonprofits, providing 200+ organizations technical assistance and grants. She then served as Interim CEO at Full Circle Fund where she supported 175+ Bay Area members to advise nonprofits in areas such as finance, marketing, and strategy development.
As a student at Stanford, Roxana conducted research on Oakland’s Office of African American Male Achievement to advise on how school districts access funding, develop student outreach programs and measure impact. She also helped lead user centered design sprints and prototyping donor tools at the Effective Philanthropy Lab housed within Stanford’s Center for Philanthropy and Civic Society. Roxana is currently on the Board of Full Circle Fund and The Ever Forward Club – an organization focused on empowering black and Latino young men.
Edward Wang is a fierce advocate for nonprofits and social changemakers. After five years of excellence as a senior advisor at Tides, he has taken on the role of director of corporate philanthropy, overseeing Tides’ engagement with corporate partners to support the implementation of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies, as well as growing Tides’ ability to scale impact of the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors.
Edward has more than 18 years of experience working in the nonprofit sector. He has designed and facilitated networks that bring together donors, cross-sector institutions, and multi-stakeholder initiatives to collaborate on various issues, with a goal of expanding and scaling participation and impact. Prior to joining Tides, Edward served as the development manager at World Savvy, an organization that prepares the next generation of leaders to learn, work, and thrive as responsible global citizens in the 21st century. Additionally, he was a development officer for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, which empowers Latino families with the knowledge and resources to successfully complete higher education, while providing scholarships and support services to as many exceptional Hispanic American students as possible.
Edward has advised on several cross-culture projects, including the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra’s performance at the opening celebrations of 2008 Beijing Games. He has also advised a range of nonprofit organizations on the topics of strategic planning, resource development, and capacity building. He cares deeply about social justice issues and actively volunteers with community organizations.
As Tides works with today’s most innovative partners, we are excited to grow our staff and specialize in the areas that best serve our work to accelerate the pace of social change.
Joel Bashevkin is a galvanizing leader with a passion for social good. He joins Tides as the director of social ventures where he is leading a strong team that delivers sophisticated nonprofit acceleration and fiscal sponsorship services, strategic guidance, shared knowledge and infrastructure, and partnering for policy change and advocacy capacity. Joel will guide the Tides’ social venture services, continuous improvements, and field building work for the fiscal sponsorship ecosystem.
Joel brings an entrepreneurial, innovative approach to building strong cross-sector collaborations with a passion for creating social impact, locally and globally. During his three decades in the nonprofit sector, he has led, mentored, and consulted to organizations undergoing tremendous growth and organizational development.
He comes to Tides after 10 years at the Taproot Foundation. As their head of Global Pro Bono, Joel conceptualized, founded, and led strategy implementation for the Global Pro Bono Network in a joint venture with BMW Foundation. He also served as Taproot’s regional executive director and built a strong pro bono marketplace by engaging business professionals, nonprofits, and corporations in high quality, impactful pro bono engagements. During his tenure, he directed the delivery of 500,000 hours of high quality pro bono capacity building consulting grants.
Prior to joining Taproot, Joel served as executive director of the Jewish Community Center of the East Bay. Additionally, he is on the advisory board for St. Mary’s College School of Economics and Business and was a long-standing judge for SF Business Times’ Corporate Philanthropy Awards.
Peter Martin is an entrepreneurial philanthropy and nonprofit leader with a successful track record in strategic planning, fund development, client service, and team leadership. As Tides’ new director of philanthropy, Peter helps Tides stay focused on exemplary client service and foster greater strategic engagement with clients to maximize their real-world impact through philanthropy, advocacy, and impact investing.
Before joining Tides, Peter was a strategic philanthropic advisor to individuals and family foundations. In that role he helped establish new charitable entities and advised clients on their philanthropic plans, programmatic priorities, and grantmaking portfolios. He’s adept at working across a range of issues for clients, but is particularly driven by climate solutions, environmental justice, immigrant rights, and civic engagement. Previously, he served 15 years at the Sierra Club. In his role as executive director of the Sierra Club Foundation, he oversaw a $55+ million annual revenue and grants budget, advised donors on their philanthropic goals, led on impact investing, and partnered with board and staff leaders to plan and launch a multi-year Climate Recovery Partnership capital campaign.
Peter also has extensive nonprofit board experience. Most notably, he helped re-shape the board while serving as executive director of the Sierra Club Foundation and currently sits on the board of directors of Children for Change, a local nonprofit in Marin County committed to creating a new generation of global citizens, empowered with knowledge and empathy to create positive change in the world. His deep personal commitment to mobilizing philanthropy and investments to solve humanity’s biggest challenges makes him a natural fit with Tides.
